In its ongoing effort to find money for road projects, the Ohio Department of Transportationwill stop operating travel <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> information centers at rest stops near state borders, possiblytransferring some duties to local tourism groups.About half of the 32 employees who work at those centers have already transferred to other jobswithin ODOT or retired, spokesman Steve Faulkner said.The department is asking the remaining employees to apply for other open ODOT positions,Faulkner said. The ultimate savings in payroll and benefits will be abou <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> t $2.1 million a year.The centers are part of rest stops that distribute maps and tourism brochures to travelers.Travel counselors staff them from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.The rest areas themselves will stay open. There are 104 along Ohio roads.The information centers are inside 11 rest areas in nine counties: Ashtabula, Belmont, Butler,Preble, Scioto, Trumbull, Warren, Washington and Wood. A 12th center is in the Statehouse. Thedepartment will stop running that one as well.“This is really a function of tourism,†Faulkner said. “This falls outside of ODOT. We buildroads and bridges.â€TourismOhio, the state’s tourism office, met with ODOT last year to discuss options, but itdoesn’t have the staff to maintain the travel centers, said Pat Barker, the office’s interimdirector.ODOT officials also met with tourism officials in each of the counties where travel centers arelocated to see whether they would be willing to take on the centers. All have expressed interest inproviding maps and information about attractions, but only one group — the Belmont County TourismCouncil — has agreed to staff a center.“It would be an ideal spot for us,†said Eugene “Doc†Householder, the county’s tourismdirector.The county won’t have to pay rent, but it will have to pick up some utility bills.Faulkner said he didn’t know when ODOT would complete the transfer of duties in Belmont Countyand elsewhere.Rest stops have been a particular focus of both money-making and budget-cutting for ODOT in thepast year. The department <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> has planned $1.6 billion more in construction than it can afford in thenext decade, Director Jerry Wray has said.ODOT has explored allowing restaurants and gas stations at some of its rest stops, but nodevelopers expressed interest in July after the department called for proposals on five ofthem.ODOT signed a contract in the fall with Massachusetts-based Travelers Marketing to handle namingrights and advertising at interstate rest stops. The contract could bring Ohio $13 million overseven years.

Sammy Sosa Speaks On Hall of Fame, a Presidential Run in the Dominican Republic
Sammy Sosa thinks he and fellow steroid-era baseball star Mark McGwire belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
He also said the Chicago Cubs should retire his number, and he left open the possibility of running for president of the Dominican Republic during an interview Wednesday on the website Ustream.com.
Asked if he thinks he or McGwire belong in the Hall, Sosa said: "I think so."
"I'm not going to come here and say anything that is going to jeopardize my future," he added. "But definitely time will determine everything. Right now whatever it is, it is. I am not (somebody who) is going to go out there and say anything I don't <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> want to say. I'm waiting for my time. ... I <a href={url}>{keyword}</a> don't like controversy. Definitely time will determine everything."
Sosa, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens were denied entry to the Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility amid suspicions their accomplishments were boosted by performance-enhancing drugs. McGwire, 10th on the career home run list, received 16.9 percent of the vote on his seventh try, far short of the 75 percent needed for election.
Sosa, who finished with 609 home runs and ranks eighth on the all-time chart, received 12.5 percent of the vote. He was among those who tested positive in Major League Baseball's 2003 anon <a href={url}>{keyword}</a>ymous survey, The New York Times reported in 2009. He told a Congressional committee in 2005 that he never took illegal performance-enhancing drugs.
Meanwhile, Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts said at the team's fan convention last weekend that the club might try to re-establish a relationship with Sosa, who left on bad terms following the 2004 season. The organization had different ownership and management back then.
Sosa said he was aware of Ricketts' comments.
"They know where I am," he said. "If they want to find me, they have to call me. I'm always available."
Would he run for president of the Dominican Republic?
''You never know," Sosa said.
